Can I wipe the soot off myself?
Please don't — puff-back soot is greasy and acidic, and wiping it the wrong way smears it and sets stains permanently, turning a cleanable surface into one that has to be repainted or replaced. The cleaning order and method genuinely matter here.
Is a puff back covered by insurance?
Often yes, as a sudden accidental event. We document the loss and handle the claim — puff backs are messier and more involved than they first look, and a proper scope makes for a cleaner claim.
Will the smell go away?
